Brucella suis


Species Incubation period Clinical signs
Pigs Abortions have been seen as early as 17 days. Clinical signs may be transient. Abortions (at any time in gestation) and infertility in sows, sterility in gilts and boars, heavy piglet mortality, orchitis (usually unilateral) and reduced fertility in boars, lameness and incoordination which may be associated with arthritis and osteomyelitis, posterior paralysis, weak offspring. Temporary or permanent orchitis can be seen in boars (sterility may be the only sign of infection in boars). Swollen joints and tendon sheaths or lameness can occur in both sexes. Posterior paralysis, metritis, and abscesses in other parts of the body are less commonly seen. Weanlings may show signs of spondylitis and posterior paralysis.
Cattle -- Abortion, metritis, mastitis, orchitis, epididymitis, lameness, arthritis, hygromas, and subcutaneous abscess formation.
Caribou, reindeer -- --
Horses -- Mostly asymptomatic. Occasional abortions (rare), fistulous withers, poll evil. In chronic cases, nearby ligaments and the dorsal vertebral spines may become necrotic.
Dogs, cats -- Usually subclinical although can be severe. Fever, emaciation, abortions, arthritis, orchitis, anestrus.
